World Beer Festival Returns to Columbia for 4th Straight Year

All About Beer Magazine presents World Beer Festival back at Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center this Saturday, January 28, 2012! A celebration of the world beer culture, the 2012 World Beer Festival provides attendees a broad sampling of hundreds of beers, food from a variety of local restaurants, educational sessions by industry experts, and entertainment by local musicians.
Over 100 breweries will be present featuring a variety of beer styles to sample, including pale ales, IPAs, witbiers, kölsch, pilsners, ciders, stouts and many more.The festival challenges attendees to explore the beer varieties and find out what beer style suits their taste. In addition to a variety of foods and beverages, there will performances from local musicians throughout the festival.

Hotel rooms are still available for a discounted rate at the Hilton Columbia Center for Friday, January 27. The special is $115.00 per night for a standard room, if attending the Beer Festival. There are hotel rooms available for Saturday night, but no more promotional rooms are available. Rooms will run a normal rate Saturday.

First Responders Remembrance Memorial Unveiling Ceremony on 9/11

The official First Responders Remembrance Memorial unveiling ceremony is planned for Sunday, September 11, 2011 at 3:00 pm at Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center to honor the 56 great American heroes to date who have lost their lives.

The memorial will include a pair of 25 foot granite towers and the 2 steel beams which will be crossed, showing how the country united after the attacks on the United States on 9/11/01. The memorial will include the names of all of the victims of the attack on New York City, both citizens and first responders, who gave their lives in New York that day, along with the names of all the South Carolina Midlands first responders (police, fire, EMS, and military) who have given their lives since that morning in 2001.

The Home Builders Association of Greater Columbia Remodelers is hosting the 17th Annual Home Improvement Show this weekend at Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. The show features exhibitors in home improvement, remodeling, construction and related industries. The show will be held Friday, August 19 from 1:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Saturday, August 20 from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm, and Sunday, August 21 from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Whether you're just thinking about remodeling your home, or if you're in the middle of a project and looking for the latest in home improvement technology, you'll enjoy a one-stop shopping and learning experience with this show. USC School of Medicine leading the way in ultrasound education; Ultrasound World Congress to gather in Columbia in April

It's been called the stethoscope for the 21st century.

The University of South Carolina School of Medicine is making its own mark with ultrasound. It's the only medical school in the country using ultrasound as part of the curriculum during all four years of medical school. Medical students at USC are trained to use ultrasound to learn, to diagnose and to treat patients.

Because of the University's leading role in ultrasound education, medical schools around the country have visited USC to learn more about ultrasound and physician training. From April 29 - May 1, the USC School of Medicine will host the first World Congress on Ultrasound in Medical Education, bringing medical students, physicians and healthcare professionals from around the world to Columbia. The event will take place at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center.

"When you look at the advances in the technology of ultrasound, it's been tremendous in the last five to 10 years," Dean, School of Medicine, Richard Hoppmann said.

"Because ultrasound is portable, inexpensive and easy to use, it's also the perfect diagnostic tool in rural areas or developing countries," Hoppmann said. It can be used by primary-care physicians or nurse practitioners, particularly in rural areas where there are not many specialists.

Hoppmann said the World Congress will showcase the USC School of Medicine's work in ultrasound and the city of Columbia. GE Healthcare is the corporate benefactor for the event.

"It's truly going to be a world congress," Hoppmann said. "We've had commitments from all over the world - Germany, Italy, India, Bulgaria, and Australia. Having this platform for the School of Medicine and the University of South Carolina and the Columbia community is wonderful. This is a huge opportunity for us."

One Millionth Visitor Welcomed to Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center

This morning, our staff was honored to celebrate the one millionth guest to visit the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. At about 8:30 a.m., Dr. Simon Hudson was counted as the one millionth visitor to cross through the doors of the facility as he entered to attend the University of South Carolina Provost's Spring meeting. In celebration of the milestone, Dr. Hudson was honored at the opening of the meeting with a gift filled famously hot gift items representing the convention center, the City of Columbia and Richland and Lexington Counties.

The Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center first opened its doors in September, 2004, and has serviced numerous visitors, meeting planners and meeting attendees since its opening. The economic impact of the facility has been felt throughout the region's restaurants, hotels and attractions.

Ric Luber, president/CEO of the Midlands Authority for Conventions, Sports & Tourism (MACST), says the accomplishments of the building are incredible considering the size of the facility. "We're a small convention center and to be able to service international meetings, city-wide events and big fishing tournaments, among other types of events, is remarkable and it's due to the management and staff of the facility and our community partners," Luber said.

Cheerleaders and Dancers Invade the Convention Center

Big-Time Cheerleading and Dance is coming to Columbia, SC. On January 8, 2011, JAMfest Cheer and Dance Events will host The New Year's JAM at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. Nearly 900 cheerleaders and dancers will "take the stage" for The New Year's JAM, a cheer and dance competition.

This event will feature more than 50 cheer and dance teams with athletes representing three states: Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina! Almost 1,500 spectators are expected to travel to Columbia, SC to watch these athletes compete for awards in their respective all-star and school divisions. Admission is free and the event it open to the public.

Teams will compete at this "Mega-JAM Championship" for awards in their respective divisions and for overall Grand Champion awards. Each team will win a trophy regardless of place of finish. All first place teams will receive individual medals, and second and third place teams will receive ribbons.

Spice up your Thanksgiving with Chef Bob St. Lawrence's quick and easy recipes

If you're anything like me, the last time you turned your oven on was to heat up leftover pizza or -- if you were feeling extra ambitious -- to bake some cupcakes or brownies with a store-bought premix for a company party. Those of you "Paula Deens" of the world are probably on the hunt for the latest and greatest recipe to spice up your family traditions. The good news is, I'm not about to share any of my cooking advice. I've consulted with our in-house expert, Chef Bob St. Lawrence of Ovations, for some fresh, yet quick and easy recipes for you to enjoy. Aside from the Roast Turkey with Famous Pan Nectar, these are fresh and simple, quick and easy recipes -- but we hear the roast turkey is so worth the extra time.

So...warm up to those cousins you haven't seen all year with a sweet, caramel apple cider or sweeten' up grandpa with Bob's pumpkin cheesecake dessert!

Quick + Easy Warm Caramel Apple Cider

Heat on medium heat 1/2 gallon apple cider with 1-2 tsps pumpkin pie spice and a small 8 ounce jar of caramel ice cream topping. Adds another whole dimension to cider! For grown-ups, you might also want to add 6 ounces of bourbon whiskey...

Quick + Easy Orange Cranberry-Glazed Sweet Potatoes

Peel and dice 2 pounds of sweet potatoes. Covered just barely with water and either cook on the stove or microwave until done. Heat a sauce with one 15 ounce can whole berry cranberry sauce, 1/2 cup dark brown sugar, 1/2 stick real butter, 3 ounces frozen orange juice concentrate (no added water), and 1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice. Pour over drained, cooked sweet potatoes and heat through.

Quick + Easy Pumpkin Cheesecake

Prepare Libby's Pumpkin Pie Filling Mix as per the package directions before adding my ingredients and continuing with the recipe.

With mixer, blend together 1 can Libby's Pumpkin Pie Filling Mix (NOT just canned Pumpkin) with 1 pound cream cheese, 1/2 can sweet and condensed milk, 1 egg and 1/4 cup bourbon whiskey until creamy. Pour into store bought graham pie shell and bake in 325 degree oven until center is still just a little jiggly; start checking every 5 minutes after a half hour. Take out, cool 15 minutes, then put in fridge until cold. Serve with real whipped cream and a drizzle of caramel.

Quick + Easy Pumpkin Corn Muffins

Blend together 1 can Libby's Pumpkin Pie Filling (not just canned pumpkin) with 3 boxes Jiffy Corn Muffin Mix. Bake in muffin tins with liners at 375 degrees until cooked through, about 10 minutes.

Quick + Easy Traditional New England Sausage Dressing Muffins

3 loaves white bread
- Dice bread into cubes and leave out uncovered overnight to get a bit dried out or toast a bit in the oven at 350 degrees if you don't have time for that.

1 pound sage pork sausage (up to 2, if your family chooses)
1 whole small (or 2/3 large) celery bunch, finely chopped
2 pounds onions, finely chopped
1/4 cup poultry seasoning, more or less, to taste
1 quart chicken or turkey stock with 2 bay leaves
- Cook and crumble sausage in large frying pan. Add vegetables and seasoning and cook on medium heat until softened. Just cover with stock, bring to a quick boil on high heat, then lower heat to about a third and simmer for 15 minutes.

Pour over bread cubes and mix a few minutes to cool. Then add 4 eggs and finish mixing. Bake buttered muffin tins for 15 minutes.

Chef Bob St. Lawrence's Roast Turkey and Famous Pan Nectar

When you roast the turkey, put carrots, onions and celery in the bottom of the roasting pan with the giblets and neck. Then place the turkey on a rack, pour 3-4 cups of water over it, rub it with real butter, and season it with poultry seasoning. Cover it with a clean, wet dishtowel for a moist turkey that won't get too dark too quickly. Roast it at 325 degrees, basting occasionally, until it hits an internal temperature of 150 degrees. Remove the dishtowel, place back in the oven at 350 degrees, cook until it's golden brown and has an internal temperature of 160 degrees. Let it sit for a half hour to settle before slicing, while it will continue to cook and reach an internal temperature of 165 degrees ("carry over cooking").

While the turkey's resting, put everything else from the pan into a pot. There will be a grease in the top of the pot, so use it to start your roux:

Use the fat from the turkey drippings and heat in a small saute pan. You're going to make a roux, which is equal parts fat and flour which is a thickening agent, so use either 4 oz of turkey fat, or 2 oz turkey fat and 2 oz butter for a richer flavor. Add 1/2 cup flour to it and cook on medium heat for about 5 minutes until it smells like hazelnuts and is golden in color. Set aside and let cool.

Note: Bob says the reason most family gravies are lumpy is because most home cooks try to thicken gravy with just flour and water. The roux is the key to a rich, flavorful "nectar" that your family will crave for years to come.

Then your stock:
Take the turkey drippings, giblets, and turkey neck with all the carrots, onions and celery from the pan and place into a pot. Add poultry seasoning, sage, thyme, celery salt, and a bay leaf and bring to a simmer to make your stock.

Then your gravy:
Strain stock and add water to make 1 quart. Bring to a boil and add roux with a whisk. Use only enough roux to thicken to a medium consistency. Add a chicken bouillon cube or two, to taste or buy the chicken (not beef) flavor "Better than Bouillon" base that's sold in stores. Add any extra seasoning "to taste" and prepare for compliments!

The Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center welcomes The Free Medical Clinic's Doctors Lounge to the facility Thursday, November 18. The Doctors Lounge is a concert featuring talented local physician musicians raising money for The Free Medical Clinic. Artistic physicians will play music in a variety of genres including bluegrass, jazz, piano, and classical guitar. There will also be a silent auction and hor d-oeuvres.

About The Free Medical Clinic:
The Free Medical Clinic helps patients who have household income at or below 133% of the federal poverty level and have no health insurance (no Medicare, Medicaid or private insurance).

The SC Book Festival will host a singer/songwriter panel presentation on Sunday, March 1 at 2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. The event is free and will be held in Richland Room B of the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. Presentation and discussion will be lead by Danielle Howle, Paul Allen, and Tyler Mechem.

WeAreRadio, “The Sound and Voice of South Carolina Rock and Roll”, will be on site as the official Radio Media for the event and its musicians. WeAreRadio will be located throughout the festival at Booth #112.

Starting at 5:30 p.m., Stephen Webb with WeAreRadio will emcee the singer/songwriter live music night. From omelets to Asian-inspired delicacies, action stations are being hailed as the newest food and beverage trend for group meals, receptions and other catered events.

According to partyspot.com, a new party planning website, action stations "are sort of halfway between a buffet and a seated meal." The website suggests that guests be served an appetizer and/or a salad at their seats then allow them to venture to different stations to try the various fares. They also add that many party planners are choosing to theme their stations by cuisine, such as sushi at one, tapas at another, etc.

Mack Stone, Columbia (S.C.) Metropolitan Convention Center's general manager and vice president, said he is noticing meeting planners opting for the action stations. He said several rounds with food items placed on platters are positioned around the meeting space. He also noted that this type of set up lends itself to being "a good business atmosphere where attendees can network while grabbing a bite to eat."

"Action stations with the right presentation have proven to be a very good substation for events with restricted budgets," Stone said. "The convention center invested in the action stations a few months ago and they have gone over very well with meeting planners. Attendees enjoy being able to go from station to station and mingle and network with fellow peers."

He emphasized that action stations are "an alternative to a plated lunch or dinner and much more economical. They also make the atmosphere a little more open to conversation and professional relationships."

The possibilities are endless for creative ways to engage in this hot trend, according to Bob St. Lawrence, catering executive chef/general manager for Ovations. "There is so much variety with action stations," he said. "You can keep it simple with fruit, cheese and sandwiches, or go all out with a pasta bar, seafood station, desserts—it really depends on what you want for your reception or event. Attendees love it because there's a wide variety of delicacies and they aren't stuck to a table to enjoy it."

Some regularly used action stations include carving stations, pasta stations and mashed potato stations. Some "out-of-the box" options include a gourmet grilled cheese station offered at the Lafayette Inn in Stanardsville, Va., whose catering department oversees on- and off-site events. A uniformed chef customizes a grill station with a planners' selection of breads and cheeses, such as brie with almonds and raspberry jam on sourdough and mozzarella on sun dried tomato foccaccio. Sandwiches are also served with a demitasse of tomato basil soup.

Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center Deemed Very Walkable

According to walkscore.com, Columbia, SC received an 86 out of 100 score in walkability. Walk Score calculates the walkability of an address by locating nearby stores, restaurants, schools, parks, etc., and measures how easy it is to live a car-lite lifestyle. With a score of 86, Columbia is considered to be a "very walkable" city with the flexibility to be able to get by without owning a car. The Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center, in the heart of it all, scored a 91.

Walk Score uses a patent-pending system to measure the walkability of an address. The Walk Score algorithm awards points based on the distance to the closest amenity in each category. If the closest amenity in a category is within .25 miles (or .4 km), they assign the maximum number of points. The number of points declines as the distance approaches one mile (or 1.6 km)—no points are awarded for amenities further than one mile. A slogan is only a portion of what this campaign will include. The campaign is a comprehensive marketing process that begins with branding and will be carried through with advertising and direct marketing. The campaign will be designed to strategically target the meeting planners, sports event planners and leisure travelers determined by the Authority to be candidates for the many amenities and products Columbia's tourism community has to offer.

Our efforts are being funded by accommodations taxes generated and paid for by visitors who have come to our city. Accommodations taxes are collected for the purpose of funding tourism, which generates $1 billion in economic impact for the Columbia region each year. The travel and tourism industry saves the average local taxpaying family an estimated $690 a year in taxes. Our goal in conducting this new campaign is to increase this economic impact to our region.

FLW Outdoors Announces 2008 Wal-Mart FLW Tour Schedule
Forrest Wood Cup Heading to Columbia, S.C.

DETROIT (July 11, 2007) - FLW Outdoors announced its 2008 Wal-Mart FLW Tour schedule today at the Chevy Open. The schedule includes some familiar destinations for the world's top bass anglers plus the introduction of a new 12-day off-limits at every tour stop.

The new off-limits, adopted at the request of FLW Tour anglers, will precede an official practice period that starts the Saturday prior to each tournament and extends through Tuesday of the tournament week. Registration for each event will be held on a Wednesday and no competitors will be allowed on tournament waters that day. Competition will run Thursday through Sunday, with the FLW Tour's traditional top-10 cut taking place following Friday's weigh-in. The heaviest cumulative weight from Saturday and Sunday will determine the winning pro as in 2007.

In addition to the off-limits period, FLW Tour anglers may not solicit or receive fishing information from anyone except for confirmed tournament anglers in 2008. Anglers who make the top-10 cut may not solicit or receive fishing information from anyone except for other top-10 anglers. During practice, pro anglers may fish only with other confirmed tournament anglers, immediate family members, approved sponsor representatives or approved media representatives.

Also new for 2008 is an adjustment to the payouts in the $1.5 million Wal-Mart, Chevy and National Guard opens that will see a greater percentage of the field receiving at least $10,000. Payouts of $10,000 cash will now extend through 75th place in Pro Division. Cash awards of $5,000 will extend through 100th place in each of the opens. Payouts in of the tour's three $1 million qualifiers remains unchanged with $10,000 cash awards extending though 50th place and $2,000 cash through 75th place. Additionally, pros finishing 76th through 100th will receive a $100 gas card from BP at each $1 million qualifier in 2008.

"All of our program enhancements for 2008 were adopted to continue to grow the sport," said FLW Outdoors President and CEO Charlie Evans. "Our mission is to provide the absolute best tournaments possible for our anglers, our sponsors and our fans. We are having a terrific 2007 season and 2008 promises to be even better."

Wal-Mart FLW Tour competition kicks off Feb. 28-March 2 on Lake Toho in Kissimmee, Fla., and then continues on Lewis Smith Lake in Jasper, Ala., April 3-6. Lake Norman in Charlotte, N.C., will host the $1.5 million National Guard Open April 24-27 followed by the $1.5 million Wal-Mart Open on Beaver Lake in Rogers, Ark., May 15-18. Knoxville, Tenn., will host the fifth tour stop June 19-22 with anglers fishing Fort Loudoun-Tellico, and the Detroit River in Detroit, Mich., will host the $1.5 million Chevy Open July 10-13. The $2 million Forrest Wood Cup presented by Castrol will be held on Lake Murray in Columbia, S.C., Aug. 14-17.

Entry fees for 2008 are unchanged at $3,500 per qualifier and $4,000 per open for pros and $700 per qualifier and $800 per open for co-anglers. The top 100 anglers from the 2007 FLW Tour and the top 30 anglers from the 2007 Wal-Mart FLW Series will have priority entry into the 2008 FLW Tour. Entry dates will be released soon.

Columbia, SC – (January 25, 2008) In an effort to give back to the community, the Midlands Authority for Conventions, Sports & Tourism (MACST) has signed an agreement to participate in the Adopt-A-Street cleanup program through Keep the Midlands Beautiful and the City of Columbia. The MACST has adopted the portion of Lincoln Street that runs alongside the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center from Blossom Street to Elmwood Avenue. The first cleanup day is scheduled for February 8, 2008.

According to Peter Tarlow, renowned international tourism expert and author, "Beautification helps a tourism entity grow by attracting more visitors, providing positive word of mouth publicity, creating an environment that tends to lift the spirits of service personnel, and creates community pride often resulting in the lowering of crime rates."

Ric Luber, president/CEO for the MACST states, "We like to think of beautification as having an impact on the local economy. When a meeting planner visits the Riverbanks region, it's imperative that we are able to showcase a clean and healthy environment with great restaurants, attractions, and unique shopping. A clean and unpolluted region is a great selling point for our community."

Through the Adopt-A-Highway and Adopt-A-Street programs, caring citizens take part in preserving and maintaining streets throughout the Midlands. Participating community organizations (civic, school or business groups) adopt sections of road in or near their communities and clean litter from those segments at least four times a year for two years.

The benefits are numerous. First, the program serves as an educational tool against littering and establishes stewardship of public lands. Secondly, the program helps advance tourism, development and quality of life for all of our citizens by improving the appearance of our area. Finally, the program saves taxpayer dollars by performing a valuable public service on a volunteer basis.

Representatives from the Columbia region to include the Columbia Metropolitan Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB), the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center (CMCC), Embassy Suites Hotel, the Clarion Downtown Hotel, the Courtyard Columbia Downtown at USC, the Hilton Columbia Center, the Marriott Columbia City Center, the Hilton Garden Inn Harbison, the Radisson Hotel and Conference Center, and the Hyatt Place won "2008 Best Block" at this year's South Carolina Society of Association Executives (SCSAE) Trade Show which was held Thursday, January 24, 2008 at the CMCC. The trade show featured more than 85 exhibitor booths including three blocks.

Fall Bridal Showcase to be Held September 9, 2007

Brides have a lot to do before they say “I do.” Columbia Bridal Associates is pleased to announce the Fall Bridal Showcase will be held Sunday, September 9, 2007 from 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center in Columbia, SC. Admission will be $7.

The Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center is located at 1101 Lincoln Street in Columbia’s thriving Vista district.
