Clash In the Carolinas

Combinations, right hooks and body blows and determinations to beat the count will only bring the power a fighter need take on an opponent and face off as professional boxing comes to The Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center.

Platinum Boxing Promotions, LLC rolls out the red carpet as they make plans to bring professional title fights with well known local names to the City of
Columbia. Platinum Boxing Promotions will present “The Clash In The Carolinas” Saturday, August 8th, 2009 at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center located in the Vista at 1101 Lincoln Street, Columbia, South Carolina. Doors will open to the public at 6:00 PM and the first bout will enter the ring at 7:00 PM.

The ring will be ready for an evening of professional boxing at its best. The event will exhibit entertainment, celebrity appearances and seven professional bouts delivered at the sound of the bell leading up to the main event featuring CBO Heavyweight Champion Moultrie Witherspoon . The evening’s undercard will feature Korean superstar Jae-Sung Lee and Columbia’s own Corey Goodwin making his professional debut and more including a female bout with Lisa Bolin of Sharon, SC.

“My goal is to shine a bright light on professional boxing in the southeastern region and deliver professional boxing events that will provide an opportunity for boxers to get their names out there in boxing industry. The city has always been known for other sporting events however professional boxing has always been a struggle to maintain here. I shouldn’t have to travel to
Las Vegas to see a good professional fight when we’ve got good fighters right here in the palmetto state,” said Platinum Boxing Promotions promoter DM “Lex” Alexis.

City officials, media, sponsors, boxing fans will have the opportunity to take photos and meet with the fighters at the official weigh-in on
Friday, August 7, 2009, at The Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center from 4 PM- 6 PM. This event is free and open to the public.

First Sun EAP & USC Theatre Students Collaborate to Showcase Employee Assistance Program Benefits

First Sun, USC Theater Students to Showcase Benefits of EAPs in Live Performance

Columbia, S.C. – First Sun EAP, which provides employee assistance programs (EAPs) to more than 300 companies in South Carolina, and the University of South Carolina Theater Department will present a live performance Aug. 4 to demonstrate how an EAP can help employers and their workers in times of crisis.

The target audience will be human resources professionals, managers, and insurance agents and brokers. Members of the news media are invited to photograph the performance and/or interview organizers. Media members covering the event should see Maria Lund, president and COO of First Sun EAP, at the convention center.

WHO: First Sun EAP and the University of South Carolina Theater Department.

WHAT: Students from USC’s Theater Department will perform skits, and First Sun EAP officials will provide information to demonstrate how an EAP can benefit workers during tough economic times and other periods of crisis. Participants will learn how to help a person in crisis, how to assist in averting a crisis, how a company can partner with an EAP to have a positive impact on the workplace, and more.

WHY: During an economic downturn, workers increasingly report stress-related symptoms as many worry about job security, financial obligations, their health and more. EAPs are designed to help a company’s workers manage stressful situations, both at work and in their personal lives. A successful EAP can help companies reduce turnover and employee absenteeism, as well as boost productivity and morale.

EAPs provide assessments, confidential counseling and referrals to help employees manage stress stemming from work issues, health problems, substance abuse, loss of a loved one, legal matters, financial planning, finding child care, and many other sources.

Two New Exciting Events as part of the 2009 SC Book Festival

The SC Book Festival will host a singer/songwriter panel presentation on Sunday, March 1 at 2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. The event is free and will be held in Richland Room B of the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. Presentation and discussion will be lead by Danielle Howle, Paul Allen, and Tyler Mechem.

WeAreRadio, “The Sound and Voice of South Carolina Rock and Roll”, will be on site as the official Radio Media for the event and its musicians. WeAreRadio will be located throughout the festival at Booth #112.

Starting at 5:30 p.m., Stephen Webb with WeAreRadio will emcee the singer/songwriter live music night. Opening act will be Owen Beverly and John Satterfield featuring performances from Paul Allen, Tyler Mechem and Danielle Howl. Special guest performances will be by Josh Roberts, Daniel Kyre, and Brian Connor. A late-night performance is scheduled to be preformed by the Daniel Kyre Band.

C-SPAN New Civics Bus to Visit SC Book Festival February 26- March 1


The award-winning C-SPAN Civics Bus is back on the road on its new “100 Days, 100 Schools” national tour. The 45-foot mobile production studio and demonstration center will travel to Columbia and finish up its tour at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center after stopping at Airport High School, Ben Lippen School, the West Columbia Rotary, and Benedict College. Time Warner in Columbia is hosting the Bus during its visit.

The Bus will be open for talks with students and teachers at Airport and Ben Lippen schools. The public is invited aboard the Bus at Benedict College and the South Carolina Book Festival. We will also be filming interviews for C-SPAN2’s BookTV at the festival.

Midlands Authority Recognizes 2008 Employee of the Year

The Midlands Authority for Conventions, Sports & Tourism (MACST) is pleased to announce Kelly Barbrey as the Employee of the Year Award recipient for 2008. As Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Barbrey is responsible for the marketing efforts of the Columbia Metropolitan Convention & Visitors Bureau, the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center, the Columbia Regional Sports Council and the Columbia Regional Visitors Center. She is also responsible for each entity’s advertising plan as well as overseeing the sales of each department.

Barbrey was incredibly instrumental in Columbia’s latest marketing campaign; Columbia, SC Famously Hot. Her strong leadership skills directed the hiring of the MACST’s newest advertising agency, ADCO, as well working with other community leaders to set the direction of the new campaign. Her expertise in the convention and meetings industry has landed Columbia in premier trade publications with prime locations for targeting meeting planners. In addition, all of the partner services, marketing, and communications for the organization are under her management.

President/CEO for the MACST, Ric Luber, states, “Kelly is an exceptionally smart and sharp professional.
